What should I know about allergies?

Sometimes your immune system reacts to certain substances, such as pollen, bee venom or certain foods, and attacks as though these substances are foreign invaders. Your immune system creates antibodies to fight off these invaders. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system's reaction and rush of antibodies can irritate your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system.

Allergens can be grouped into two separate categories: environmental allergies and food allergies.

  • Environmental allergies include hay fever, respiratory allergies and other allergies such as latex. Diagnosis is important so you can identify reactions that could be severe, as well as to feel better.
  • Food allergies are an abnormal response to certain foods. Your response may be mild, or in rare cases it can be associated with a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. It is extremely important to get testing to detect and confirm food allergies.

How do I find out if I have allergies?
Blood tests can show if you have allergies. We offer a wide range of tests so you can figure out what you are allergic to and what is triggering you to feel unwell.

How can I get tested?

You can order your own blood tests right now, without consulting a health care provider. We offer several different allergy tests to help you figure out what you are allergic to. Simply read the test descriptions and choose the test that best matches your symptoms or your suspicions for what you may be allergic to; then pay for the test and our board-certified physician will authorize you to have it performed. After you order the test, you will receive a laboratory requisition in your email that you can bring with you to more than 50 convenient HNL Lab Medicine locations where we will draw your blood for testing.

When your results are ready, we will let you know. Your test results are secure, confidential and available to only you. You can choose if you want to share your results with anyone else, including your doctor. Please note, we do not accept insurance at this time.
