What should I know about allergies?
Sometimes your immune system reacts to certain substances, such as pollen, bee venom or certain foods, and attacks as though these substances are foreign invaders. Your immune system creates antibodies to fight off these invaders. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system's reaction and rush of antibodies can irritate your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system.
Allergens can be grouped into two separate categories: environmental allergies and food allergies.
- Environmental allergies include hay fever, respiratory allergies and other allergies such as latex. Diagnosis is important so you can identify reactions that could be severe, as well as to feel better.
- Food allergies are an abnormal response to certain foods. Your response may be mild, or in rare cases it can be associated with a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. It is extremely important to get testing to detect and confirm food allergies.
