This test measures how quickly your blood clots. This is important if you are on blood-thinning medicine or if you have a clotting disorder. PT/INR stands for Prothrombin Time (PT)/International Normalized Ratio (INR).

Recommended For:

Anyone who is on blood thinners or anyone who suspects they may have a clotting disorder.

Normally, if you cut yourself, your body forms a blood clot to stop the bleeding. If your blood does not clot quickly enough, it can be dangerous because you can lose a lot of blood quickly. People who take blood thinners can have this problem, which is why they are monitored closely with this test.

In another situation, if your blood clots too quickly you could be at risk for other serious conditions. Blood clots can form in the blood vessels and travel to your brain, heart, kidneys, lungs and limbs. This increases your risk for heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the deep leg veins) and pulmonary embolism (when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to your lungs).

If this test comes back abnormal, you should contact a health care provider.
