The strep throat test is used to determine if a sore throat is caused by a bacteria called Strep, (group A Streptococcus, also called "group A strep"). Sore throats are caused by many things – viruses, bacteria, allergens, environmental irritants (such as cigarette smoke), chronic postnasal drip. Most are caused by a virus. A sore throat caused by Group A strep could require antibiotics while viral and other causes do not.

Recommended for:
People who have a sore throat that starts quickly and causes pain when swallowing, a fever of 101° F or higher, or reddened throat and/or tonsils with white or yellow patches or streaks. Additional symptoms could be a headache, nausea, or vomiting.

There is no preparation for this test

Test Processing:
Same day if rapid testing is positive, 1-3 days to process culture if initial rapid test is negative.
